We believe everybody has the potential to be a successful mathematician.
As a Federation our aim is to ensure consistency and progression from mental to written calculations throughout the school. Our calculation policy (see link below) has been carefully devised to ensure children develop a conceptual understanding of all four operations (an understanding of why a mathematical idea is important and the kinds of contexts in which is it useful.)
Teachers will support and guide children through the following important stages:
- Talk about mathematics using appropriate vocabulary
- Develop the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract recording (CPA approach)
- Use jottings to aid mental strategies
- Use strategies such as an empty number line as a key model to support the teaching and learning of mental calculations
- Use strategies that support the children's conceptual understanding as opposed to following a procedure
- Know when it is more efficient to use a mental or written method, or a calculator
- Include opportunities for children to apply their strategies to solve a wide range of problems.
The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:
* become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
* reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
* can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
For mathematics to be meaningful children must see the links to real life situations. This means that using and applying newly acquired skills within problem solving and investigative work is essential and should be embedded in most mathematics lessons reflecting the importance of mathematics in everyday life.
