YEARS 4/5/6 KEYSTAGE 2

Welcome to Kingfisher Class

Welcome back after the Spring half term,  as we continue our exciting year. We are both looking forward to continuing our learning journey with the children.

Spring Term 2 - Topic Work

This half term the children will be working upon a topic entitled "Rivers". In this topic the children will  be learning about the science of the water cycle, how rivers are formed, the different stages of their creation/development, their geography and their importance to the environment.

Our Curriculum

In Kingfisher class we largely follow a topic based curriculum, meaning that our English, topic and science lessons are linked by a common theme. Using a cross-curricular approach to teaching enables the children to make connections in their learning, and allows them to apply the skills they have been taught in a variety of different contexts.

As Kingfisher class is a mixed age setting, we take our topics from across the Key Stage 2 curriculum so that we can cater for all of the different year groups within the class.

This year in Kingfisher class (2018/19) we will be studying the following topics:

Autumn 1 Autumn 2  Spring 1
Stone age to Iron age Explorers Ancient Greeks
Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2
Rivers Art in focus Coasts

Whenever possible, we also like to enhance our curriculum with school trips and visits. Our 1st trip last term was to Flag Fen in Peterborough, to investigate the lives of Bronze age people. This term we hoping to investigate the origin and course of our OWN local river - the NAR.

Home Learning

In Kingfisher class, homework consists of:

Learning tasks – These are given to the children at the beginning of the half term and are to be handed in on Thursdays for marking. Learning logs usually contain the children’s home learning, but sometimes the children may choose to complete a craft activity which needs to be brought into school separately. Children should complete at least three tasks from their home learning menu over the half term. The menu is on the back page of the half term class newsletter (please see the PDF file below)

Spellings – Spellings are weekly and are usually differentiated by year group. Whenever possible, all of our children will be working upon the same spelling rule each week. All spellings for each half term will be upon the class newsletter (as per homework - see the PDF file below)

Reading – Children should aim to read at home at least 3 times each week. As children become more fluent readers this does not have to be to an adult, but should be recorded in their reading record.
